Kids in Museums Takeover Day

Our work with Bamburgh school

Willow class from Bamburgh school, took part in South Shield's Museum and At Gallery's annual Kids in Museums, Takeover Day.

Takeover Day is when heritage and cultural sites invite children and young people to take over jobs normally done by adults. This can be anything from co-creating events and exhibitions to helping to design new activities.

Using artwork created by internationally acclaimed local South Shields artist Sheila Graber for inspiration, the children took part in role play, sensory, poetry, animation, painting, and movement activities to help explore their creative responses to the artwork and Sheila's life.

What made this event even more special, was that it was all conducted over Zoom during the course of an entire school day.

As part of the project, Willow class completed a Discover Arts Award. This entailed documenting their activities and experiences in individual logbooks, researching an artist and their work and then sharing their art discoveries. Because of Lockdown, we were unable to hold an exhibition at the museum, so the class made a video instead.

I hope you enjoy seeing what Bambugh School Willow class got up to!
