My Patch
Virtual exhibition
South Shields Museum & Art Gallery
Managed by North East Museums on behalf of South Tyneside Council
This is an exhibition of work by BTEC Level 2 and Level 3 students at South Tyneside College, and is the result of a collaboration between South Tyneside College and South Shields Museum and Art Gallery that began early in 2020.
There were two assignments resulting in the two exhibition strands. The first is My Patch (Level 2) which is about places we know, like, live and work in, and the second is Portraiture, (Level 3) which has been an important part of art practice since the beginning of time.
An important aspect of the assignment was that it should provide work based learning that gave students an experience of presenting work in a professional context, so as well as the artistic challenges presented to them, they have had to consider the interpretation and presentation of their work in a real exhibition setting. The project brief was originally conceived as a live brief that would conclude with students producing a real exhibition with interpretation for the Art Gallery at South Shields Museum. However, as our plans were quickly constrained by the pandemic, we had to adapt both the delivery of the learning and the exhibition of the work to digital platforms. As you will see, this has not diminished the student’s capacity to be thoughtful and creative and make innovative work to be proud of. Everyone involved in the project has been resourceful and determined and we look forward to more collaboration in the future.
